Staining of the Golgi apparatus in human cell line U-251 MG (HPA001677)
Scale bar represents 10µm

Golgi apparatus

The Golgi apparatus consists of several stacks of membrane-bound cisternae that make up three functionally different parts: the cis-Golgi, medial-Golgi and trans-Golgi network. Proteins and lipids that are synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum move on to the cis-Golgi network for uptake and subsequent processing and sorting before exiting through the trans-Golgi one. They are then sent on to their final destinations within the cell.

Immunofluorescent staining

The Golgi apparatus is located next to the nucleus. In U-251 MG and U-2 OS it is often more spherically shaped and centered around the centrosome, whereas it in A-431 often stretches out encircling the nucleus.
